The only thing putting me off is the slow 9G burn and it wont write 99min cds, which means keeping a good CD writer as well for the time being.
Alos I cant really justify spending the cash on one at the moment.
Otherwise it looks excellent  :)

Maybe in a few months they will have speeded the 9G writing up and made it overburn CDs and still be around the price they are today or even less  :)

I still have my CD burner as a seperate unit (aopen 52x32x52x)
By pressing the eject button for 5secs it ups the R spped to super speed  8)

Quote
PCstats is testing out the a 52x CD, 32x CD-RW, 52x CD-R burner made by AOpen, the "CRW5232/ARR". Maximum CD-R write speeds have hit their limit at the 52x burn speed, and this standard has been around for well over a year now. That shouldn't be much of a surprise though, after all, a 52x burner can fill a regular 650MB disc with information in just over 83 seconds, and a 700MB disc in just under 90 seconds!

Of course there's more to the AOpen 52x32x52x CD-RW than speedy burning; one innovative thing AOpen has done is include three coloured face plates with the drive! Those of you with aluminum or fancy black cases will like the option of choosing a matching silver or black face plates for your PC. And hey, if you're using a regular white box PC, the beige faceplate works just fine too.

Totally agree - just update the firmware to the latest version (if you haven't already) - it then supports the Ritek G05 dye at 8x properly. Link on www.rpc1.org - I used the dangerous brothers A111 version with the windows flasher.

As to keeping a CD-Writer - due to the price of blanks these days it's pretty much pointless burning to a CD-R when a DVD-R is about 24p for an 8 speed (printable) - honestly now...when was the last time you managed to find a 99 minutes CD-R nevermind burn one without errors ;)
hey promised the earth! Then delivered mud.
Technically it did meet the spec.

Not confident on updating firmware? is it easy and foolproof?

Yep - you just need to run one of the files. I used the a111 Auto version.

Just make sure all other applications are shut down before trying to do the update. It should detect the drive and then say which firmware you already have installed and which one you are going to upgrade to.

You do need to reboot the machine after the flashing though and also will probably need to reboot after windows re-detects the drive on the reboot.

I did both of them?? does that matter. Also there was no other unit working when I flashed  ;D so to speak, and it didn't say anything about what version or which one to upgrade or ask me to shut down...weird??

I have managed to do a disk at 4X but not 8X WTF..the disks (Bulkpaq 8x speed) worked before the flash and not after :( and the 4X are mirror platiman.

Can I over flash the units again with A111AUTO ??

Cheers for the help.

Edit: just found this in device manager under the said drive? did it flash?

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your burning program/s and maybe removing your writer from device manager and let it pick it up again after it reboots  ???
