Newbie Network assistance please!
« on: September 26, 2004, 17:24 »
Hi,

I am attempting to set up a network between my computer and laptop (previously I connected through a 802.11b wireless connection - but too slow, and didn't get a good signal)

I am attempting to connect them directly through a network cable.  But am having problems.  Network tries to connect and then gives me an error: 'A network cable is unplugged'.

The comp has spec:
-Windows XP Professional
-Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC

The laptop:
-Windows XP Home Service Pack 2
-broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller

I know the network cards are different - but sure I can connect them?? (mite be a dodgy 2nd hand cable I am using), but could anybody advise me how to set this up using please!!

THANKS

It sounds like you are using a "straight" cable not a "crossed" one.
Routers use straight ones, (although more and more these days are auto sensing and seem to be able to use either without any problem), you need a crossed one if its straight from a pc to another pc  :)
