Removing Unnecessary Programs from Starting Automatically
« on: September 27, 2004, 00:11 »
Many programs add portions of themselves starting automatically on every login.

This can be either in the Startup Folder or the Registry.

One easy way to tell is by looking at how many icons are in your system tray. If you have a large number, perhaps unnecessary resources are being allocated them as well as increasing your boot time.

Typical examples are Microsoft Office, Office FindFast, Real Player, ATI Video setting etc.

You can remove them in one of three main ways:

1 - In the  Start / Programs / Startup Folder

    2 - In the Registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run

3 - If you have Win98, WinME or Windows2000 you can use MSCONFIG to easily remove programs. This one could be preferred since it allows you to toggle them back on again in case you make a mistake

Or you could just download THESE two little beauties

" Nice utilities: Mike Lin's Startup Monitor & Startup Control Panel

Today it's the time for two utilities that help me to block unwanted programs, spyware, and so on... that try to register themselves at Windows Startup...

The first (StartupMonitor) runs in background (with a very limited memory and resource occupation) and warns if some program attempts to register itself, allowing you to block it.

The second (Startup Control Panel) adds a program in the Control Panel that allows you to select which program can run and which can't in the already registered programs. Programs can be put in quarantine, and reenabled later...

Congratulations to the author Mike Lin, please check his site for other very nice utilities"

I personally use both of them, as they are a fool proof   ;D
