Bin the PC or fix it?
« on: October 18, 2004, 22:47 »
Hi Guys me again  ;D

So what are my options ......

Seem to have big probs with DLL's

First if I go up to the top of my start list I get an error Explorer caused an error in shell32.dll

If I try to open my pictures I get Error OE:0187 BFF8E64B

Other messages I've had recently that caused a reboot are errors on kernal32.dll and shlwapi.dll. (new one on me)

Bin it???

I've done all the checks, spybot, adware, virus check, scandisc, norton check thing, I've searched mircosoft. I've done hijack this and it looks okay too me, mind I might ask dack.

Oh and after I did all the checks it just kept freezing so I restored it! LOL

I can get on the internet fine and dandy.

Any Idea's guys?   I can get a gun if need be.

 ::) ;D :'(

Try this Michelle, you wil need your (**8gfu***)ME cd as it will replace any missing files from the cd.

Go to Start/Run and type sfc /scannow then click ok.
It will take a while but hopefully it will replace the missing/damaged .dlls  :)

Welcome to DLL hell (as it's affectionately knnown :))

Sounds like you've got several versions of the DLLs in various places around your system. Worth booting into safe mode and looking for where you've got the duplicates.

Open DOS box
type:
CD \
dir shlwapi.dll /s

and see where the locations of the named files are. Also check the date as it should give you a clue as to whe the file was altered.

Problem with a lot of software is that it can sometimes install it's own required DLLs over the top of the ones the system actually need :(
e.g. http://www.devx.com/vb2themax/Tip/18834

Still running Millenium? Then try system restoring:
start->all programs->accesories->system tools->system restore

Now off to try and stop kiddywink screaming - looks like he's got an attack of conjuctivitus. :(
hey promised the earth! Then delivered mud.
Technically it did meet the spec.

Okay so I don't have an ME disc only a restore disc which doesn't have these DLL's on.

Can I download them from somewhere?  I'll have a look in the meantime anyway.

okay .......

so I downloaded another shell32.dll and tried to just copy it over to windows/system, it wouldn't do it cos it was being used by windows.  ::)

I notice its smaller than the one I have in there it being 1.32mb and the old one is 2.17mb? Does this matter?  :-\

And how do I get it installed now, do I do that
Go to Start/Run and type sfc /scannow then click ok.that sandra said still?  ???

Oh and I did a search on it and I only had one of them in windows/system.

From what you said in your first post, "Explorer caused an error in shell32.dll", it might not mean you need to replace shell32.dll.  Something is causing an error in it, so I would take that as shell32.dll is probably not the thing which is actually at fault.

I think there is a way to repair ME using the ME disc, but it's not as simple as pressing 'R' when you reinstall.  Dack will probably be the best one to help you out with this.

Someone said that ME didnt have sfc (system file checker) which surprised me as I am sure all other windows OSs has it  ???
Unfortunately Michelle I think it either verifies that all the system files are correct and then replaces them from the OS cd.
You could try running it and seeing if it says there are any incorrect files as it gives an option to skip, if I remember correctly, so you could take note of any files that it finds that are corrupted posibly  ???

Ah I see Simon ..

I'll try that then Sandra and see if it works.

I just found in some notes that once it said
shell32.dll application overflowed temp mem area.

That may mean something...... or not  ::) ;D
