Weird XP Problems
« on: February 15, 2005, 15:11 »
Yo guys, The new boards rock!!!!

right i've been trying to fix one of my friends laptop but there's a problem and it's been driving me mad!!!

Right firstly i'm not sure what's wrong with it, it could even be a random option she has changed by accident or something or it could be spyware i don't know!

anyway basically the  windows are just so un-user firendly it's unbelieveable!!! everytime you minimise a window, it doesn't sit on the taskbar at the bottom of windows it disappears and the only way to see it is ctrl+alt+delete. It's not just that it's loads of niggly things like links on internet explorer don't work and emails don't send.

I know it's a bit vague but any ideas of the problems?

thanks guys

Jaminxz

The window disappearing could be that the task bar tool bar settings needs unlocking then dragging up a little and relocking once you have it set correctly.
As far the other problems it sounds like its possibly the firewall settings  :?

Ok sandra checked those out but it's definitely not that! I tried removing as much spyware as possible, this resolved some of the issues but there's still alot wrong with it, i think there's like a virus/worm and maybe some addware, if someone could take a look at the log and get back to me i'd be greatful,

Thanks

While you are waiting for someone to make a pronouncement on your HJT logfile, try  http://www.x-raypc.com/  It's a free download which examines the files in your registry and will automatically analyse them for you.  It will tell you if they are "goodies or baddies" without having to wait.

You might want to try starting in safe mode and fixing the following:

Quote from: "Jaminxz"

O2 - BHO: ngpw34.clsIS - {2D7CB618-CC1C-4126-A7E3-F5B12D3BCF71} - c:\windows\ngpw34.dll
O2 - BHO: Helper Class - {D80C4E21-C346-4E21-8E64-20746AA20AEB} - C:\Program Files\NavExcel Search Toolbar\NavExcelBar.dll
O2 - BHO: ngsw31.clsIS - {E9147A0A-A866-4214-B47C-DA821891240F} - c:\windows\ngsw31.dll
O3 - Toolbar: NavExcel Toolbar - {5AA06644-BC46-4220-A460-47A6EB47C96D} - C:\Program Files\NavExcel Search Toolbar\NavExcelBar.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ares] "C:\Program Files\Ares\Ares.exe" -h

Might also be a problem as Ares can be a password cracker or a P2P sharing application . As Kazza is also installed I guess the latter
hey promised the earth! Then delivered mud.
Technically it did meet the spec.

I downloaded xoftspy, Clive.  It found 2 pieces of malware

Mainpean Dialer and win32.lospad.A. but couldn't remove them as you had to purchase it first.

I ran regedit but couldn't see them there.

How do I get rid of them without paying $39 ?????

Oh is that the problem you were talking about on another thread Lona?  I didn't realise that - oh wait.... where did xoft-spy come from?  I gave the url for x-raypc which is supposed to be free according to the Daily Telegraph.  Mrs Clive still insists that Skype is free too!  You seem to be discriminated against.   :horror:

Thanks, Joudi,

I've been on those sites but can't see any of those files listed as running in task manager or when I do a file search.

I've checked with regedit and can't see that key number either

I downloaded the Cleaner form

http://www.moosoft.com/products/cleaner/search/

I ran it and it found no trojans so I'll just have to hope their not there.

Clive, your right the xraypc is free but I downloaded the xoft-spy software.
and no I didn't post it on another thread, it was this one.

I also ran the xraypc and couldn't make head nor tail of the report.
I have one bad file but I can't find it either.

Well, I suppose it's possible that xoftspy 'found' something that only it can remove, in order to part you from your $39?   :?

I have heard that some of these "Try before you buy"  cleaners/removers claim to have found spurious faults/rogue programs and then they somehow remove them when you pay the retail price even though they werent really there before

Weird XP Problems
I was talking to a friend about the problem of when minimizing the window it disappears from the taskbar and he said he has a feeling it's a "shel error" but doesn;t know too much about it or how to fix it. IS this what it could be? and any ideas on how to fix it??

thanks
