That's a brilliant site Dave and should be included in all UK travel guides.  Buying a drink at a bar is quite a challenge for all of us in a strange and crowded pub!

I always thought it was a myth, but there is a pub in one of the villages local to me, where everyone does go silent when a stranger walks in!  What a bloody boring existance it must be for the landlord, to be serving the same small handful of locals day in day out.  I like a pub with a quiet friendly atmosphere (no loud music or huge TV screens), a real fire, good beer, and home cooked food, not out of a microwave.

well all we have hear is large screens and loud music!! well apart from the one pub which ONLY puts on the screens for the rugby!!!

the quite "local" pub where it went silent when you walked in recently burnt down, we reckon it was an insurance job.

I live in "studentville" and am in walking distance of about 10 pubs, varying standard and pubness. Some, like the one at the end of my street, are glorified wine bars.. trying to classify as pubs.

How much would you say pay for a pint though? Here its £1 on a cheap night but usually £1.30 (carlsberg), £1.50 londons pride and guiness at about £2.

Anything from about £2.00 for a standard lager, but up to £2.85 for the likes of a pint of Stella or Carlsberg Export.
