Hi my dad installed windows xp pro and service pack 1 on the pc after formatting and it was running really slow and took about 5 or 10 mins to shut down... i have xp pro and mine doesnt do tht so my dad formatted it again and put it all on again... it seemed perfect until he installed msn 6.2(windows said it was needed to use messenger) and deleted all the old system restor points.. he tried to shut it down and once again it took 5 or 10 mins...

any suggestions???   thnx in advance JoNaH

Hmm, if you do a disk cleanup then try defragmenting the hard disk then post back the results... Also can you take a look in the task manager processes tab (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and see how many programs are running..

It could be that its taking so long because there are a lot of things it needs to close  :?

What happens when he removes MSN 6.2?  Try scanning for spyware too, with Ad Aware and Spybot.  It does sound like a recalcitrant program refusing to close, maybe one he is unaware of running in the background.

Ad Aware
Spybot S&D
Spyware Blaster

I have a program by TR-Software? called XP-Antispy 3E.

This enables many changes to the way XP works.

One of the settings enables fast shutdown.

Only a small program, about 76Kb.

Might this help?

Could send a copy either via email or messenger if it is of any use.
f in doubt, hit it with a hammer, if it doesn't fall off it's working!

When you said he formatted it Jonah, do you mean he actually booted and installed from the cd or did he just run it over the top in the original windows OS  :?
