IE6 won't work since installing Broadband!?!?
« on: May 19, 2005, 15:39 »
Installed broadband last night, but much to my dismay, ever since, I can't get IE to load up ANY websites ("Cannot find address")!!

I'm with PlusNet, using a BT Voyager 105 modem, and it's been suggested that there may be conflicts between the drivers for the modem, and my (barely) six-months-old HP desktop - anyone have any additional info. on this?

I'm running XP on IE6, and as I say, the machine is still pretty new.

Dare I ask if it could have anything to do with the dreaded Adware/Spyware corrupting files somewhere?  I ran Norton and Spybot last week, and cleaned out a whole bunch of cr*p!!

Would be really grateful for any help with this.

Cheers,

doubt it is a adware problem from what you have said.

By "Cannot find address" it would suggest that you havent got a connection. Is your computer getting an IP address? XP will probably tell you if you are connected or not, does it?

Another interesting thing before we go any further (as it could just be a setting in IE) have you been able to use any other online facility (i.e. outlook, firefox - anything that connects to the internet)?

Also are you running firewall software? (if not get some as soon as you can - zonealarm is a good one).

To check that the modem is installed and working correctly go to Start/ All Programs/ Accessories/ Communications and then Hyper Terminal.

Set up your mobile phone as the number to ring and check that it dials it.
If it wont dial it then either the modem isnt installed or its conflicting or your line hasnt been activated yet.

Has Plusnet confirmed that your line has been activated ?

Well, after re-installing the modem drivers, the problem was still there, so
I decided to call the HP helpline (service included with the PC deal) for further advice.

Guy was very helpful, but after talking me thru a few obvious checks/fixes, he reckoned the best thing to do was "F10" it back to the factory settings.  Bit of a pain, I know, but I backed up the stuff I needed, and was back up-and-running in abut three hours.

Result?  Machine is now working great, and I'm enjoying the tremendously improved online experience that broadband brings (can't fault PlusNet, other than their delivery/set-up time being longer than advertised)!!

Thanks to all for the help offered.   :D
