When I buy a DVD nowadays I like to ensure the years of enjoyment I would expect when investing my hard-earned money into a movie by backing up that movie. So i backup my DVDs using a freeware tool called DVD Decrypter in combination with Nero.

I?m not so sure this is the easiest or best way to get this job done. So I put the question to the experts at PC-pals. What, in yalls opinion, is the best way to backup one's DVD investments? What application or combination of applications do yall find best suited for performing this once complicated task?

Well, we have to point out that even backing up your own DVDs is technically illegal, but as we are only suggesting available software, and have no responsibility for what the user does with it, have you tried DVD Fab, Bob? Only thing is, it's not freeware, but can be found from the usual sources.

The latest version of DVD Shrink, (freeware), seems to handle the encryption as well as shrinking to fit a standard 4.7 gig DVD without the need of DVD Decrypter, I think it also has a burn now part that will use any burning prog you have as default

As Delgado mentioned in another thread, DVD Santa seems to work quite well especially if converting and wanting to add two or more DVD films to a single DVD as does Uleads DVD Movie Factory Suite

i agree with sandra, dvd shrink is excellent for backing up, authoring and compressing video. i've not found anything it couldnt handle so i've never had to use dvd decrypter to date.

I was lead to believe that you could make one copy for personal use as long as you had the legit copy and paid for it. I know when I buy games it states that you are allowed to make one backup copy.

You almost certainly couldn't get into trouble for that, Lona, although I'm not sure that even that is 'legal'. They don't exactly advise it on the packaging.

As I said, we only advise on which software might be available. We have no control over how it could be used. :wink:

I have a pc game from eidos and it states on the instructions that you are allowed to make one backup copy for personal use.

yes some do state that...though you will have a bitch "backing up" most games as they are running with more and complex security devices...though there is always 'www.gamecopyworld.com' (for backups only, note: pc-pals.com is in no way affiliated or responsible for the content on this site)

Sam did post the link, and I disabled it, Bob. You can still visit the site by manually pasting the link into your browser. We just have to be a bit careful. Bear in mind, this time last year, this thread wouldn't have been allowed at all.

Over here in the states, the knowledge to find illegals isn't illegal. It's the actual illegal things that the gov normally brings sites down and throw people in jail for.

You only need tools to back up your DVDs.

1, DVD Decrypter.
2, DVD Shrink.
3, DVD43. Free issue not the pay 1 DVD43 here
4, Nero

i totally agree with simon disabling the link...i was thinking of making it just text in the first place.

This site is legit and though the software they tell you about can be used for illegal activities it is advocated for backup stuff - something I personally do.. I dont want to have to rebuy my favourite game when its scratched to f***.

Oh and as for posting information that contains illegal material - I believe a site was shut recently for posting links to torrents. Whats the difference between this and software. End of the day it is our necks on the line. Sorry to say this but we have to be careful. Maybe all information should be free, damn I advocate that but someone put the time and effort in to making it - maybe you should pay? Either way I dont want to get involved in a long conversation on this matter, it is something that we would never come up with a conclusion to.

Oh and the EU has nothing to do with this, I believe in fact that more american sites have been shut they EU sites for content relating to illegal activites. End of the day if someone really wants to share content with another about these sort of things then there is always PM! :-)
