networking settings - norton firewall
« on: August 05, 2005, 20:01 »
The problem: Getting the playstation 2 to access online gaming via my PC's broadband connection, using a network card.

I have a playstation 2 with network card, (that works fine, i've used it), connected via a (tested) switchover cable to the network card in my pc. Internet connection sharing is enable on my ample broadband connection, but and heres the issue... I now have windows xp and norton internet security (2005) which needs to be configured to allow the network setup to work.
What would the interface need...? TCP/IP something..? UDP.....?
I need to create a rule in nortons firewall setup to allow the connection i think, but can't figure out what to it is i should be allowing....!

windows firewall is off.
I have had a connection from the setup before, so it's a software issue. The ps2 network profile is fine as i have used it before, i have tried a new one, with no luck. None of the FAQ's help!

thanks in advance.

Hi Clum, and  :welcome:

Someone will be along soon to help you in more detail, but in the meantime, if you open NIS, then click Firewall > Configure, there's a Networking tab, which looks like you may just have to add what you want to allow, to the Trusted Zone.  If that's not what you need, check back later and I expect Sandra will be along with some further help.

I dont think I can add much more to what Simons suggested.

The TCP/IP part should be set up automatically when you run XPs network wizard.
The UDP is usually for a port number that you allow through the firewall if you know which specific ports your PS2 uses, thats usually more for a routers firewall configuration along with the TCP port.

Are you using a router or just PS2 to PC by a crossed cable ?

That is probably what i need....
I'm using a crossover cable from PS2 to PC ethernet card.

I'm confused as to what the settings in Norton Internet should be allowing in the trusted zone.... i am trying various things, tcp/ip permitted etc. but havn't found the culprit.

thanks   :D

What you usually need to add is the IP address of your local network, or the range.

If you open the control panel of your pc and then click Network Connections then My Network Places in the menu on the left and then View Workgroup Computers in the menu on the left does it show both your PC and the PS2 ?

If it does then open Network Connections and left click on the LAN icon to highlight it. At the bottom of the menu on the left there is a section called Details.
That will give you the IP address of your PC on the LAN, as you have set up whats known as an "Adhoc Network" it will probably start with 169 and will have another 3 sets of numbers after it.
If you can find where to put a range of IP addresses in the firewall settings then you need to put the first 3 groups of numbers in as 0 to say 10 for the last number in the start and end part.

I hope this sorts it for you  :)

no sign of the ps2 in the workgroup, no sign of anything!
From memory on setting this up last time, win 2000 and old norton... the connection didn't like the home network that was called mshome by default, and used a bridge or similar.

I have the ip address via "ipconfig" at the comand prompt. but nothing in the workgroup for the ps2.

We do have a couple of members using PS2 and Xboxes on the same setup as you have, maybe one of those can shed some light on the problem.

How do you access the setup on the PS2, does it show the options on another monitor or a shared one with your pc?
I have never used one so I can only guess at how it works and assume that it acts like a normal pc on the network  :?

the ps2 uses a tv... direct plugin, it worked as i said, its the pc that is at issue here i think. just some bloomin settings somewhere which are doing my preverbial nut!
the ps2 shares the internet connection and i think, just uses the pc as a gateway to the connection, little else.

So you dont have any menus in the PS2 relating to the network ?

Have you tried disabling the firewall temporarily to see if the PS2 can get on line ?

Ok this looks like it should explain what you need to do to add your PS2s IP address or range to Norton on your main pc :

Hope it helps  :)

If i could find out what i am looking for Nortons log files log just about everything to do with connectivity, what is it i'm looking for in there, a connection from what port..? Is there a way to determine the port of an ethernet card on a machine? that might help!

There shouldn't be that many connections in Norton's log.  If I look on mine, all that's listed is my machine name + IP, and 'localhost'.  You should be able to spot which is the ethernet, if it's in there.  Sorry, I can't be of much further help - Sandra will be along soon, hopefully!

The portshouldnt mater as long as it knows the range of IP addresses on the LAN.
Yours should be in the range of 169.254.0.0 and 169.254.255.255

I would have thought that a spread of around 10 IPs from the lower number should be sufficient but I cant see there being a problem if you put the maiximum range in.

The only time that you may have to specify a particular port is that some different games apperently use different ports for online gaming, (usually the ports are listed in the game information) but I think that would only apply to the NAT on a router and not on a firewall such as Norton  :(
