Stack Overflow and out of memory errors
« on: October 05, 2005, 18:36 »
Hi, looking for some help please!!

Currently using XP, and on browsing today, i came up with a box with error saying,

STACK OVERFLOW 4,

straight afterwards, i got another one saying

OUT OF MEMORY AT LINE :421

I have searched the net looking for help on it and not really getting anywhere.... checked my event viewer and nothing relevant in there either.

Are these major error messages? Can anyone tell me exactly what they are and how to fix it please??!

I have also run my spybot and virus scanner to double check everything, and nothing shown up on those either....

Any help greatly appreciated!

Hi Sally,

Not exactly in simple terms, but I did find this:-

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=145799

which may at least explain what they are.  If that's beyond you (as it is me!), hopefully someone will be along to simplify things later.  :)

Stack Overflow and Out of Memory error messages tend to relate to low Virtual Memory.

Do you get these messages when just surfing and no other programs running ?

Have you a lot of applications running in startup ?
You can go to Start then Run and type on MSCONFIG, click OK.
In the window that opens up tick Selective Startup then go to the Startup tab.
The more applications that are ticked in there then the slower your pc will boot up and the more memory it will use.
Untick any programs such as office, paint etc. In fact the only ones you really need are the ones relating to your AV and Firewall programs and Systray.exe and possibly Scanregw.exe

After unticking click Apply and then OK and then you will be prompted to reboot.
Hopefully that will stop the messages appearing, if not come back to us  :)
