Topic: Nero - What's the Point of it?

Unless I am missing the obvious, Nero doesn't support jpeg (jpg) files, making it pretty bloody useless.

I decided to burn the hundreds of photos I have taken over the last year on to CD, not only to free up some hard drive space but also to empty "My Pictures" folder so that it will be clean in time for 2006.  Opening Nero Burning Rom, I browsed to the folder where my photos are stored, but Nero showed an empty folder, causing alrm bells to ring.  Nevertheless, I used the drop-down in the file types box to choose "All Files" and they appeared.  However, when I tried to drag them across to burn, an alert box popped up stating that Nero didn't recognise this unsupported file type.  Fortunately, I have the 2.3MB free version of Deepburner on this machine, so was easily able to switch to this superior program and do the job in no time.

At a time when handling digital photography is one of the most popular functions of a PC, and burning photos is probably the most frequent uses of a CD/DVD writer (not to mention one of the very few legal jobs that are actually carried out with a burner) what on earth is the point of a burning program that cannot handle the most common format of digital photograph?  There isn't any point in it at all, as there are better FREE programs on download.com.  There might be a way to convert jpegs into a format supported by Nero, but I have neither the time or inclination to faff about doing that.

Thank god I didn't pay for Nero.

That's rather strange, Dave, as I have just tried it with mine, and it recognised jpgs without any problem.  Were you trying to burn a straightforward Data CD?  That's how I did it.  In fact, I have previously burned my entire My Documents folder, including pics, sounds and everything else, to a DVD with Nero, and it performed faultlessly.

i've used nero to do that function for the past 5 years... so I can only think something odd is occuring or you havent selected the right option

Nero will burn any files as data long as its data.

I assume you were trying to burn it as a VCD and not as data  :?

Well, I'll never know why it wasn't letting me burn my pics as I uninstalled it as soon as it started playing up and saved several hundred megabytes of hard disk space.  Deepburner Free did the job beautifully and is only two and a half megabytes big!

I'm sure I was using the data option, Sandra, as I use another program "Photo2VCD"  to burn VCDs, so I wouldn't have gone near that option even if I had managed to find it in Nero's cluttered interface and menus.
