Hi, I was just wondering if someone could help me with this problem. My bit torrent ( I use BitTornado) is running rather slow lately. I was wondering why this might be since it was not like this. I have everything port forwarded and plenty of seeders and exceptions on my firewall. I did find this out however: before, it would always tell me which port it was using and that UPnP was forwarding. Now it no longer says that UPnP next to the open port. Universal Plug in Play helped me get great speeds before, but now it doesn't work? I went to my router and made sure that UPnP was enabled and also checked to make sure it is allowed through my firewall. They are both, and now I am stumped as to why I don't use UPnP with my BitTornado.

I use BitComet, and suddenly found it wouldn't download anything at all! Plenty of seeders, just zero up / down speed. I also checked all the settings, and could find nothing wrong, so switched to Azureus, which seems to work fine.

Are you getting the green "traffic light" at the top right hand side of your window when you are getting slow speeds ?

Some ISPs have been known to throttle some commonly used ports for Bit Torrents and other P2P programs

No, I used to always get the green light. Now it is always yellow, which means that something isn't working, and they give the explanation that a firewall or proxy server could be in the way. It isn't for my computer because I have checked all that. Maybe I should just switch like Simon did?

That wont make any difference I dont think.

I would definately say that it was a firewall/router port blocking problem.

I opened up ports 6881 through to 6885 on my router and other peoples routers that I have set up for Bit Torrents to use and that allows green everytime on mine and on theirs.

It made a difference to me, San. BitComet stopped working, for no apparent reason, and no settings had been changed.
I loaded Azureus, and it worked first time. I even removed BitComet from Norton, so it asked for permission again next time, and it has full access, but still doesn't work. I couldn't figure it out, so my easiest option was to switch to a different client. :? I still don't know why BitComet doesn't work any more.

Would be the ports that it required that were changed presumably Simon.

Azureus being a kind of multi P2P program is possibly easier to configure for your firewall than a specific Bit Torrents client such as Bit Comet or Bit Tornado.

Well I opened up ports 6881 through 6889 on my router for both my IP and for the default gateway since I have a dynamic IP. I also opened those ports on my firewall too. I am going to try a new application and see if anything turns up, which technically it shouldn't but who knows?

You only need to open the ports in the router to the LAN IP address of the pc that you are using for Bit Torrents downloads.

There shouldnt be a problem whether you are on a Dynamic or a Static WAN IP as thats the "other" side.

If you access your router through the web interface and go into the configuration settings you can set up a "Virtual Server".

Put the port number that you wish to open ie 6881 in the TCP part and the LAN ( Local Area Network) IP address of the pc that you are going to use for bit torrents.

Your LAN IP will probably be in the ranges of 10.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x , depending on how your router assigns the IPs.

You dont need to do anything with the WAN, (Wide Area Network) IP, that is the IP address that your ISP provides and will change each time that you reconnect as you said that it was Dynamic,

Some routers allow you to enter a range of ports, mine only allows individual ones so I have to repeat the steps for each port.

I had the same problems. Torrent said firewalled or NATied. I had to make no setting changes at all. I just place the torrent in the background and surfted the net, afterwards green lights.
