Windows Update

Has anyone else had a problem with the latest Windows Update download?  This probably only applies to XP users.  I have had the update icon in my system tray for the whole day, and it had only managed 18% after about 10 hours.  I decided to try going to the Windows Update site, to manually download the updates, but IE kept freezing.  I then tried to shut down my PC, and it stuck on the shutdown screen.  I rebooted, and used task manager to close wuaudt.exe, which had started up once more, then tried the Windows Update site again, which this time loaded, but the updates wouldn't download.  My PC also shut down properly after closing wuaudt.exe.  Seems there could be a problem with the downloads, or maybe the servers are too busy to cope?
