Hi
I have just download an update for my modem. It was in zip format, when extracting it forms many files.
.cat
.cpl
.chm
.exe
.dll
etc.
There are more than one exe file. How do I install this software.
If I click on one of the exe files I just have the windows hourglass up for a few seconds and nothing happens.

Try going into Device Manager, right click the modem and Update Drivers.  If you choose the Automatic option, it might find the drivers folder and do it for you, but if not, choose the 'Install from a specific location' option, and navigate to where the folder is.

It does not work, its a pci adsl modem listed under system devices.
When going to update driver the software is greyed out when selected.
The whole update has to be installed as it includes more than just the driver. This is a problem I am having with many updates presented in zip format. The original modem software was just in one exe file.
One of the files extracted in the zip was disk 1, are you ment to put all these files together onto a cd to install.

Not usually unless it was downloaded as an ISO or image file.

In that case it wouldnt have the seperate exe files.

The multiple exe files may be for the different opertaing systems ?

Have you got the original drivers saved on your pc or on a cd ?

If so I would uninstall the modem from inside the device manager then reboot and when it tries to reinstall the modem again dont let it do the automatic option.
It should then let you select the folder where you have unzipped the updated drivers to and install what it needs from there.

All the drivers for my modem are in zip format.

Ok I downloaded the original drivers and looked at them unzipped.

Then I went and looked at the page you linked to, incidentally it has a . after HTML that stops the page loading if anyone else wants to look, just remove the . and refresh the page.

You have to uninstall the original drivers as I suggested in my previous post.

The relevant part is this :

Download the latest drivers for your ADSL PCI modem. Extract the files into a temporary folder.

To update the ADSL Modem Drivers, you will need to completely Uninstall the previous drivers.

Restart you computer and the ADSL Modem should be redetected, when prompted for the drivers, browse to the folder you extracted the new drivers into and follow the installation process through.

When the drivers have been installed, you will need to reconfigure, your VCI, VPI and Encapsulation Mode, as listed above.

But how do you install the new file? where do you start in the list of unzipped files?

Just unzip the downloaded zipped files into a folder.

Uninstall the drivers for the modem from inside the Device Manager.
Reboot your pc.

It should automatically find the modem and the found new hardware wizard will open up and ask "Can windows connect to windows update", select the "Not at This Time" option then click next.
Then it will ask you if you want to install the drivers automatically.
Dont select that option, you want the "Specify location" option.
Click next.
Tick the "Include this location in the search" then browse for the folder where you have unzipped the download zipped files into.

Click next and sit back while it searches for the correct file it needs and installs it, you shouldnt need to do any more than browse for the folder, it will find the file that it requires by itself

I did  what you said. Lost all internet connection.
This is a  windows  system device not a modem. The installation has two major parts as well as the driver. Access runner control panel and Access runner DSL.
Without the DSL part you are unable to log in. All the upgrades shown on the site I point you to do not work. Had to search back on old cd's to re-install the old software( still in the same format, as on the site but they work.) Are you PC experts? Or just shooting in the dark like me?
How do I upgrade?

That site must have faulty or incomplete drivers on if it didnt work as it said it should.

Why are you wanting to upgrade the drivers anyway, is it not doing something that the upgrade is supposed to fix ?

There seems to be some confusion over exactly what you are trying to do, JK.  First you said you want to update your modem, then you say it's not a modem.  From reading that website which you linked to, Sandra has provided all the correct information to update the modem drivers, which is what you requested.  The Access runner control panel and Access runner DSL, if it's anything like my own ADSL set up, will be software installations, run from the .exe files you have already mentioned.  Assuming your modem is now installed with the correct drivers, you should be able to install the Access runner control panel and Access runner DSL from the .exe files you downloaded, or from the original installation CD.

We know PCs can be frustrating at times, but please don't take it out on us if things don't go right first time.  Remember, we are trying to help you, but we are not sitting in front of your PC, and can only work on the given information.

I am attemping to upgrade from windows me. the present drivers on the web site do not work at all.  The device is an adsl pci modem which appears under windows not as a modem but as a system device.
When installed correctley you have two icons on screen.
Access runner control panel, where you see the adsl line and Access runner dsl where you have your log in and password.
I understood Sandra's advice about installing the zip files. In my case only the old driver that I already had, installed correctly. Any of of the new software did not install the access runner, which you need to connect to the internet. The old and new software are in the same zip format.
I have attempted to install the new software many times but it did not work at all.
I do not think that the updated software is incorrect in anyway, there must be a problem with my method of installation.

PS Simon you cannot run any exe files at all in this installation.

Assuming you are upgrading from ME to XP (SP2), are you certain that the drivers and software for the modem are compatible with the new OS?  I have had many a problem with old modems, when trying to upgrade an OS, and it's usually driver / software incompatability.

The site that has the drivers say that they are for xp.
These pci adsl modems are not like normal modems, under windows,they are system devices.
The windows update advisor calls them
System devices:
Conexant AccessRunner PCI ADSL Interface Device
Conexant AccessRunner PCI Arbitration Device.

The upgrade goes on to say that setup cannot determine if the following programs are compatible with windows xp and will disable them during the upgrade.
accessrunner control panel (a startup program)
accessrunner dsl (a startup program)
accessrunner task bar (a startup program)
