Simon you sounded just like me a couple of hours ago. I made Michael read it and he objected to the Porn comment. He reassures me that he knows what he is doing with his computer, and I asked why every time I turn it on there is always a problem, "because the computer doesn't like you mum".
Michael is 17.
When I get another chance I'll check the Windows updates I downloaded today, that maybe the reason it's gone.

That explains EVERYTHING!!

I don't think Windows Updates alone will help all that much - you need to use the tool I referred to above, and also run Ad Aware and SpyBot.

Ad Aware
Spybot

I'm so paranoid about saying anything about teenagers as a lot of guys on forums are teenagers, and I don't want to offend anyone.
But yes it does explain a lot.

I've had WhenU myself and it's easy enough to eradicate.  Don't worry about teenagers on this forumn MB.  They are very few and far between.  Most of our members are mature in years though not in mind!

If you have the correct, up to date protection in the first place, there should be little cause for concern over web nasties, but you do still have to exercise common sense, and a degree of caution.  Never download anything from an unexpected pop up, and only download from legitimate, reputable sources.  If you choose to download from P2P networks, as many of us do, you should always scan everything you download for viruses, trojans and spyware.  If you treat everything on P2P as hostile, until proven safe, you won't go far wrong.  Oh, and never open unexpected e-mail attachments, even if they appear to be from someone you know.

I bet they wouldnt have been as clever if they'd had to use an abacus like we did at school instead of a calculator or a pc, or in Clives case one of those slates

An old man, standing amongst children, may look even older.
