My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
« on: November 11, 2006, 20:55 »
Not sure who this might appeal to on here, Sam perhaps, but I bought this CD a couple of weeks ago, and still haven't stopped playing it!  It's a kind of mix of punk, metal, prog, and pop, with a heavy 70s influence, although the band are all only in their 20s, and it's an absolute stormer of an album!  It traces the story of a young man who's in hospital dying (cheerful subject matter!), but it's also really uplifting, with songs like Dead!, House of Wolves, Teenegers, The Sharpest Lives, and the No1 single, Welcome To The Black Parade, which really rock, combined with slower, more emotional tracks like I Don't Love You, Sleep, and Cancer.  They even have Liza Minelli in a cameo role on the totally brilliant Mama.

The album sounds fantastic (of course, played really loud!), has great catchy songs, and was produced by Rob Cavallo, who was the guy behind Green Day's American Idiot.  Tha band are talented, they have a star in Gerard Way, the lead singer, and I predict that this album will really push them into the big time.  They are currently in the UK, and are returning next spring (dates below).  Anyone who appreciates good rock music, played with real instruments (not made on a bloody computer!), will love this really excellent album, which I highly recommend to anyone with a pulse!

ok simon.... I didn't expect you to pick that one! I have to totally agree. I got it a few weeks ago and it is now my most played mp3s on my ipod. It is f***ing great! I have to say something is rather familiar in Teenagers.. (scare the living s**t out of me) well the background guitar track but I can't quite place where I have heard it before. Eitherway it is damn great album... I think I have another recommendation for you I'll post it in a minute. Out of interest have you heard any of my chemical romance's earlier albums or songs? Helena is probably my fav track by them or Back to hell... close one there.

I have to say I am hoping this album really helps them learn to perform better live. They aren't bad but Gerard Way's singing is taken over a bit by shouting which from this album can't be done.

Yes, I have the previous album (Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge), which is what got me into them in the first place.  That is another great album, particularly, as you have already mentioned, Helena, and also I'm Not OK, To The End, Ghost of You, Thank You For The Venom, Guys Like Us, in fact most of the album is excellent, but for the last couple of tracks, where it kind of runs out of steam.  When I first heard TBP, I was initially a little disappointed that there were quite a few 'slow' tracks on it, as I love the energy of the previous album, but that is more than made up for by the quality of the new songs.  I'm tempted to go and see them in Brighton next year, but I'll probably be the oldest person there!  ;D

Oh, and as for similarities, The End = Pink Floyd's In The Flesh (opening track on The Wall), and Dead! is Cheap Trick's I Want You To Want Me.  The 70s influence is very strong all the way through, which is one of the reasons why I like it so much.

It's a hard song to listen to, but still a great track.  Don't forget, the theme of the album is death!

Oh, you've got Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge?  Cool!  That's more aggressive than The Black Parade, but still a brilliant album.
