Office Network
« on: April 10, 2007, 08:59 »
My mate keeps complaining that his office internet connection is too slow .
They have up to 8 pcs , although usually only 3-4 running .
Broadband connection is 2Meg
Modem is small Netgear jobbie - will have to find out the model , but looks like a home network modem .
The modem connects to a 10/100 switch and out to the computers .

Where is the bottleneck ? or is it all bad ?

If they have 3 or 4 machines feeding off one switch, the chances are that's where the bottleneck is.  Few home office networks can cope with more than a handful of machines.  How do large data transfers between machines go?  I'd expect them to be quite slow too.

It strikes me that your mate ought to consider using a dedicated server for his internet connection.

I have a friend that keeps telling me every time my connection flops to build a router. Always seemed like alot of effort to me just to have a connection that isn't slow and doesn't drop. Surely there should a decent brand of router that actually does what it advertises.
