Isn't that illegal? I could have sworn I owned my machine, and could do what I liked with it, not just 'borrowed' it from Micro$oft. What right have they got to override user settings?

Read the EULA, Simon. You only licence the software, you don't own it, and I'd bet M$ reserved the right to make mods in your best interests.
