Marty Wilde
« on: November 02, 2007, 16:35 »
I'm going to see Marty Wilde and the Wildcats tonight at my local hop.  I don't expect they will be quite as wild as they were back in the Rock 'n Roll era.   ;D

Oh Clive, that takes me back to 1960 when Marty was appearing at the Glasgow Apollo.  A girl friend of mine carried around a half chewed sweet that Marty was supposed to have thrown away.

A young lad called Jerry Dorcey was his warm up act.  Would you have imagined he would eventually become more famous than our Marty?.

To be fair, it was a teriffic show!  The Wildcats were not the originals although one had been with him for 25 years.  They were all first rate musicians and played up a storm.  Marty is celebrating 50 years in the business and is now 68.  We were sat in the 3rd row and I can tell you that he doesn't look anywhere near that age.  He can still sing well and hold a note for what seemed an eternity.  He's still very agile and remembered all the moves that made Lona scream back in 1960.  ;D  The only thing that gave it all away was his wig which was really quite obvious.  But I suppose he would have looked even sillier being bald so he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't.  He sang my favourite Marty Wilde song which was Bad Boy and he sung  most of his other hits - what a lot he had!  He also sung a lot of other late 50's early 60's songs showing that he is an all round entertainer.  He's a very professional artiste indeed and I would have no hesitation in recommending his show if he comes to a town near you.  Sadly, the theatre was only two thirds full but there were a surprising number of younger people in the audience who would not have been around during the years that Marty was in his prime.

Yes, I remember Gerry Dorsey Lona.  I often dance the Last Waltz    ;D

Gene Vincent had the right idea in adopting caps early! :)

EH has always amazed me. He's an adequate singer, but not - to my mind - star quality. Still, someone likes him...

EH is a complete enigma Rik.  Apart from Release Me and Last Waltz I would be hard pressed to name another song by him.  I can't think of anything I've ever seen him in either.  He must have the most stupid name of any pop singer and yet he's a megastar.  What am I missing?

His money?  ;D

He took his name from a classical composer, btw. Like you, I can think of few songs (you did miss Les byciclettes (sp?) of Belsize), but that's about it. I feel a bit the same way about Tom Jones, tbh.

I would say EH got by with his looks, where as Tom Jones had a marvelous voice in his heyday, although the voice has deminished now but at least he keeps reinventing himself and I thought his CD of duets with they young up and coming stars was brilliant. :)

I would say EH got by with his looks,

They weren't too fussy in those day's I guess lol  -  I was just trying to find a pic of him and I found out that his name was really Arnold Dorsey - and his friends called him Gerry ?

Also I found that Marty was Reginald Smith before. Reginald was a popular name then - Elton had it too..... So Kim Wilde was Kim Smith........ oh the things you discover lol - sorry am rambling lol and u lot probably know all that anyway :)

Out of all the things I've lost .......I miss my mind the most!!

Actually I had no idea that Marty used to be called Reginald Smith,  Although I'm not surprised that Marty Wilde is just a stage name.  Better than EH!
