does the forum have a log out facility where it will do that automagically after so long of not using it 'cos I think it just did to me

When you log in, there's a drop down menu that gives different times to stay logged in.  If you choose Forever, and allow the cookie to be stored in your browser, you should stay logged in indefinitely, Baz.

thanks Simon. just the norm as most forums then eh?  but that maybe the problem as I just ran Ccleaner t'other day and killed loads of stuff  ;D

That would have kiilled the cookie, unless you have elected to keep it in Options > Cookies.  :)
