If not using 2 video cards why would you get a motherboard with SLI?, only 2 pci slots :ack:

Michaels computer is mainly for gaming, so the possibility that he may what to run 2 cards is quite real.

Thanks Cam, looks good, I'll send it to Michael.

That mobo should be ok but dont think about XEON CPUs as theyre only really for servers, not too sure what the difference is.

The other CPU would be good in that mobo as its 1333 FSB which that mobo supports.

So, would that system be powerful enough and good enough to run the 8 series GFX cards, or two 7 series, and last for some time?

Also can it be overclocked safely?

I cant see the point of overclocking an already fast system so I cant say yes or no on that one.
I dont overclock as theres no point in creating unnecessary potential problems.

It will definately run the 8 and 7 series cards, individually or in SLI, subject to the PSU supporting it, which it should do as I think that you bought yours with that in mind.

You couldnt really improve on it by much at the moment MB, apart from going for a Quad Core which you wont be able to take advantage of yet or an Extreme CPU at silly money.
So it should be as future proof as anything can be these days, until the next fastest/best thing comes out.

For the price.. SLI is not worth it. In the end it costs you less to get a single High performing X1900XT 512MB instead of two 7800GTX 256MB cards.

SLi adds at best a 30% performance increase for a 100% increase in price. Not worth it

Thanks gmax, it's still a work in progress.......... I'm not sure it's necessary either, so I will keep looking.

But I'm fairly certain about the CPU though.  :)

I still have to get RAM and a new CPU cooler of some description.  :dunno:

Corsair make decent ram, http://www.corsair.com/

For cpu cooling i use a "3RSystems Ice Age 120", its a lot quieter than the stock cpu fan, another highly regarded cpu fan is the "Thermalright Ultra-120"

Yes, I have been looking at the Thermalright Ultra-120", but I'm starting to go cross eyed, so time for bed.   :snooze:

I'll have a read in the morning, well later.

If he's not going to need the SLI, I'm thinking a www.megaware.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=46335

or something similar.

And I've had the blue screen again, a couple of times. First one was something about the Bios, yesterdays I didn't read it.

Michael was wanting to save up for a car, but some of that money has to go to this upgrade.

So we compromised.

Okay, it isn't the best choice, he does need more PCI slots. So any suggestions?

The 6750 CPU is a definite.

I'm having trouble understanding "chipsets". I'm trying to find out which chipset the Intel® Core?2 Duo Processor E6750 is.

http://compare.intel.com/pcc/showchart.aspx?mmID=890439&familyID=1&culture=en-US

As the Asus site wants the chipset to find motherboards which will suit.

http://au.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11

And all I can find on the Intel site is this, which for me, is as clear as mud.  :dunno:

http://compare.intel.com/pcc/default.aspx?mmID=999999&familyID=10&culture=en-US

And Gigabyte is the same.

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_List.aspx?VenderType=Intel&CPUType=socket+775

    :dunno:  :sigh:   :help1:
