PC Hot hot hot
« on: March 13, 2008, 16:23 »
hey folks,

I seem to have a problem I wonder if you can advise please.....  a couple of mornings I have smelt a burning smell couldn't work out what it was. This morning I felt the PC which had only been for 2 hours and it was burning hot at the top/ rear around the vents and where the mains plug is.  So I just unplugged it and took it out of the cabinet, now I'm not sure if it was too close to the side and the fan wasn't able to funtion properly (if this could even happen?) or there is a problem.  I did see somewhere that it could be the PSU is that right?

There doesn't appear to be any other problems although in the evenings it is on longer than that and i have not noticed this smell.  Although of course now i will see how it goes.

Its a medion MT6 (5840) MT367R

I guess I shouldn't have it on if it gets hot again  :ack:

If it's still getting hot now you've moved it outside the cabinet, my first suggestion would be to pop open the case and check that all the fans are working, Michelle.  Even with the fans on, they do need ventilation in order to move the air through, to cool things.

As Simon said, open the case up Michelle, you have had it over a year now I think so its probably time for a bit of a clean out.
You will probably see a lot of dust on the fans and in the CPU Coooler.
With the pc switched off give it as good a clean as you can with a 1 inch paintbrush or similar then vaccuum out the dust that you have cleared out with the brush and from inaccessable places.
It may then be ok to put back in the cabinet but its always better to have plenty of air movement around the case if possible :)

i sucked it out with a vaccum cleaner through the vents last week, I thought thats what had done it...... cos I just read "DONT USE A HOOVER THROUGH THE VENTS!!!" LOL

ops!

okay thanks though I'll do that........ its still ok, it must have been close to the side of the cabinet for some time.

okay so I didn't clean it last night - it was just warm not hot, this morning after being on for 30mins - was red hot again! And burning smell bad - quickly switched off let cool down and opened it up........woah no wonder it was getting hot, the place was caked! So cleaned it all out.

Noticed that the fan on the psu was working very slowly and stopping occasionally, with a slight vibration. Don't thats right is it?

Anyway plugged it all back in and its been on all day and isn't even warm!!!!!!!! only very slightly at the top vent where the psu is.

And I'm sure  the fan is quieter?

So do you think It'll be okay or is the slowing fan a sign that its damaged?

Yes, see how it goes, Michelle but it sounds like it certainly needed a clean!

At least she didn't say case closed, otherwise it might have got hot again.   ;)
