When you remove the faceplate to get at the test socket, Clive, you disconnect any internal wiring in the house, and go straight to the exchange pair. If it works there, BT will blame your equipment/wiring and walk away. As you're a BT retail customer, though, they have to sort it for you. :)

Thanks for the explanation Rik. Hadn't realised that before.  My new found best friend from India phoned to say I will be the proud owner of a brand new Home Hub within 48 hours.  He promises I will be very satisfied with it.

Strangely, I am now on 0.8 Mb.  What a difference that makes!  Obviously they've tweaked something at the exchange again.
