Losing personal settings
« on: April 15, 2008, 12:39 »
For some reason over night me and the Mrs have both lost all our settings/passwords and log in details of all the sites we use? anybody else have the same problems, and how can I stop this from doing it again  :bawl:

I have googled this for a while and can't see why this should happen, it's a strange one indeed.

Have you used something like CCleaner recently?  It sounds like all of your cookies have been wiped.

System Restore might be worth a try, Terry.

It does sound like the cookies have been wiped, or possibly saved passwords in Firefox.

Firefox

I haven't used any cleaner at all, I do have cc cleaner but haven't ran it for ages. It's lucky I can remember all my settings but it's a pain re entering them all again.

Terry, Firefox is currently VERY flakey.

I posted on here last week that all my Bookmarks and toolbar buttons had vanished.  Yesterday, my toolbar buttons vanished again between argos.co.uk and here.  Fortunately I have Mozbackup, so I am able to restore settings and toolbar buttons are easy to get back.

My advice would be to download Mozbackup and make a backup of your passwords, bookmarks etc. immediately, because since the last Firefox update something isn't right.

So, assuming it's IE, the only thing I can think of to try, is System Restore, Terry.  Firefox keeps Bookmarks, Saved Passwords, Saved Cookies and settings in a separate directory, so they can't get wiped so easily.  To be honest, I don't know what IE does with them - except lose them.   :-\

there has to be a similar tool to mozbackup... but for the life of me I can't find one.

Doesn't it save the files in your My Docs area or whatever it is in vista?

I think they're in C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\AppData\Microsoft\InternetExplorer, but don't quote me on it, and they're not just simple htm or txt files like in FF.
