Topic: Looking for memory DDR 333

I am not up this stuff as Simon may testify to...I have a machine with just 512 MB  and Im looking to upgrade to 1 GB x 2 now I have been told that finding these sticks may prove hard so may be just maybe someone here may be able to assist.

Motherboard is a Prescott 800 P4i65G,not that this means that much.I have tried Crucial but cant find them there.
The labels are DDR 333 MhZ CL2.5 The present memory is Hynix.

I bought this machine used some time ago and havnt a clue if the component parts are good bad or anything so any advice would be helpful

are you sure... here any of these of use? Did you try Crucial's tool?

No Sam I couldn't the machine isn't plugged in so could nt scan it I thought that I needed to match all the details.I have found some on a site Im still not sure if it is correct procedure to put the link so I havnt.RK you probably know who they are.

Im thick as two short planks when it comes to PCs as you may learn one day to your cost  I still have trouble changing light bulbs but thats another story

I did try scanning the machine a few months ago but the scanner could not recognize the make.and I have nevr heard of it "Infinity" Its my old machine which I gave to my daughter but the lack of memory stops her playing her games (she is only 9) so I thought I would try and upgrade the RAM at least.

I have been reading through the old posts here with Simon and the old one with Simon and Tony to get an idea of how to actually build my own......

What put me off Sam was mine has 2.5 and these have 1.5 I take it that this makes no difference.or is it the case that as long as it is under that what I think is voltage that counts

1GB x 2 DDR333 CL2.5

Select : DDR
Select: DDR PC2700/333
Select pins: 184 pin [check your memory stick pins]
Select Density: 2GB
Select: Kit [they are matched pair]
Select Error checking: [Again check your existing memory stick]

Hope that is clear, when I say check, you have to actually uncheck the other options leaving only the ones you want. Should cost £51 ish

If you've read our old threads, David, you'll still have NO idea how to build a PC, but plenty on how to break one! 
 
But seriously, we do like ongoing projects, with all the trials and tribulations, and, hopefully, eventual triumphs.

CL doesn't refer to the voltage, its all about the timing accuracy.. (its actually the column access strobe latency) ... essentially I believe the smaller the number this is the better.  If you fancy a bit more of a technical read try here but I wouldn't worry, its the section under timing that gives some info... but essentially I don't really think it matters but I'd try and get lower.

Might still be worth running Crucial's memory checker if you can...


I just noticed what Crucial's advice is on this:

CAS latency (also referred to as latency) is the amount of time it takes for your memory to respond to a command. Specifically, it is the length of time between memory receiving a command to read data, and the first piece of data being sent from the memory.

Unless you are a computer enthusiast looking to push every last bit of performance out of your system, CAS latency needn't be a deciding factor when purchasing memory modules.

You may see CAS latency (clock latency) referred to as CAS#, CL#, CAS=# or CL=#. The performance difference between CAS latency ratings is virtually undetectable.

Ah that is clearer thanks you folks I found some with the exact spec all numbers and that are the same and they are retailing at £13.99 each so..With the latency issue because I saw the letter v I thought it was reduced  voltage This is going to be a long road..

At least I have taken a really good look inside and can see where things are connected and also identified work I have paid for and to be honest if it was just a case of plugging in and installing drivers...I paid a lot of money.on more than one occasion...and I supplied a lot of the parts...   Anyway I will do a little on this one and do some more homework and then start shopping.....

Just to thank you for the link Sam just read it and found it very informative...got the jist of it and I have decided to enrole in a course at my local college as soon as they start this summer.
I do want to build one and decided after some thought and a nudge from the wife to try and get some knowledge on all of this and course seems the right thing,may help me from making myself look soo stupid.......and it can only be a good thing.I dont want to programme the things just to build and get a real understanding.....may prove a good move one day

I've just added another 1GB of memory, in anticipation of installing the Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition w/SP2c I've ordered, but waiting for it to be delivered.

Its the exact same kit  I used when I built this PC back in August 2006: Kingston 1GB Kit (2x512MB) DDR PC3200/400MHz Memory Non-ECC CL3 Unbuffered 2.6V. Only difference being back then it cost £59 for a matched pair, whereas today they cost me £28.

So memory is not like houses then, always going up, oh hang on a minute yes it is, they are both going down
