Avast or Avira
« on: July 17, 2008, 19:32 »
Howdy, well now that AVG really do seem like they are about to pull the plug on ver 7.5 and having decided I don't want ver 8.0 then it seems like a straight choice between avast or avira.  I know a couple of people use Avira, does anyone who uses Avast recommend it  :dunno:

Sorry Dave, never used either myself.  You might get some idea what they are like over at Wilders.

I used Avast for a while and found it to be very good.   Davy51 uses it.

I use Avira.  Found it extremely fast.  Checking all files, it does a complete scan of my system in under half a hour, AVG used to take up to a hour and a half.

Forgot to mention, I once tried Avast, went to work wjile it ran, and it was still scanning when I arrived home eight hours later,  Needless to say, I stopped it and uninstalled it there and then.

I uninstalled Avast because it seemed to be too fast!  :dunno:

Everybody seemed to be recommending AVG at the time.  Avast had a very simple interface whereas AVG looked more "professional".  I've seen only good reviews for Avast though. (apart from Chorleydave of course!)

I find Avira very fast and thorough. I also use spybot 1.6, Spywareblaster and Comodo BoClean.  All are very good and use little resources so far I have had no infection and also do a scan with Adaware 8.

I did try Avast but it seemed to slow too many things down, I tried the latest Avg8 but it definately slows down startup with its checking engine.

I will stick to the setup I have mainly because they are all free and work well. (Skinflint that I am, ask the wife  ;D )

Whatever you call yourselves, give yourselves a pat on the back for going over this topic again!  I'd never heard of BoClean before.
