The internet service providers' letter-writing campaign is going to inconvenience everyone, not just illegal filesharers...

Entrepreneurs will come along and start new ISPs which aren't part of the BPI's cartel.  They'll attract more customers and eventually the government will legislate to force all ISPs to abide by the BPIs demands.
There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is readily adopted.

When this was first proposed a few months ago there was a lot of discussion on the BeThere forums.
A spokesman for the ISP said that they have no intention of capping, throttling or monitoring and restricting any users  :)

This is an extremely worrying development and I'm not even into file sharing.  This reminds me of the bad old days when ISPs wanted your money but didn't actually want you to use the internet for more than a few minutes a day.

I think there are still some ISPs with that ethos, Clive.  Not all, of course.  ;)

About time these bloody ISPs were made to treat their customers the same as other suppliers. Will it soon be that I shall be banned from my local sweet shop because Im eating too many sweets, and the shopkeeper cant keep up with the supply of paper bags he has to give me?

Forget the ilegal side of it; the ISPs couldnt give a s**t about that really, they are only concerned about the amount of bandwidth we use, and they dont want to have to pay for more!

Also lets get on the wagon and complain about the throttling; should this be made ilegal? If I gave short weight in my shops, I would soon be visited by the weights and measures man, and the excuse that my customers were useing too much pet food, and I didnt want to spend more money increasing my stock of carrier bags wouldnt wash!!!

You could always say thaw your tins of pet food contain up to 500g, then it seems you'd get away with it, DG.  :(

Maybe I would, but I prefer to look after my customers, and the ISPs should be made to do the same. This internet is a bloody rip off.

Sometimes I feel like saying a*****es to it, and forget it all together!!!

Of course, not all ISPs throttle or restrict speeds.  ;)

Just seems like there's something wrong with the service provider and the content provider getting into bed with each other. Someone in the UK should start up a petition page. Get enough people to sign up and you'd get the attention of the politicians.

Our politicians dont take notice of what ordinary people want Bob.
Thats why we are still being ruled by the EU, the criminals have more rights than the victims, they dont give people long enough prison sentences and for the short sentences that they do serve, they seem to be kept in relative luxury compared to how some of our pensioners live.
They wont bring the death penalty back, even though the vast majority of people want it brought back and they brought in draconian anti smoking laws that are ruining pubs and other venues against the majorities wishes, even non smokers dont agree with the total ban. I think the only people who agree with a total ban are the ex smokers  ::)

Sandra's right, Bob.  We've just had a by-election in which the government lost its third-safest seat in Scotland.  The Prime Minister's reaction was to continue 'getting on with the job'.  It's the way he's 'getting on with the job' which lost that by-election!  Politicians will only listen to public opinion if it serves their ends.

What keeps an average guy from running for office?

Absolutely anyone can run for office in the UK Bob.  I've twice done so myself and got beaten by a whisker on each occasion.  You stand a better chance of success by being a member of a large party but I stood as an Independent.  Having said that, I must admit that out of 9 seats, the Independents won 8 so I was the only one to fail.   ;D
