Although “private browsing” can be easily associated with viewing particular genres of media content, the Mozilla foundation argues “while viewing pornography may be a popular use case due to the nature of content on the Web, assuming that this is the only reason that users need private browsing trivializes the overall feature. For instance, users may wish to begin a private browsing session to research a medical condition, or plan a surprise vacation or birthday party for a loved one.”

Yeah right!   

But on a darker note, won't this also protect paedophiles from detection?  Surely that's not a good thing.

Doesn't really matter what browser a person is using. The user's ip address is still going to be logged somewhere. Private browsing is just a gimmick. All it means as far as microsoft is concerned is that your cache gets cleared when you close your browser down. This just generates buzz for IE for once. Gets people thinking that M$ is starting to focus on privacy when they're really doing everything but.

The only real way I know of to surf anonymously is to use a proxy. The deal with pedophiles is they get caught when they unknowingly share their material with online investigators, or bring their computer into a shop to get it worked on. Either way, run enough red lights and you'll eventually get caught.

Many get caught because they have provided their credit card details in exchange for such illicit material.  When the police catch up with the purveyors they have a ready made list of clients to be prosecuted.
