The coatings shouldnt affect anything David, its the end connections that are important.

Maybe something like this would save you buying another hard drive :

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-to-1394-Firewire-Printer-4P-5P-6-Adaptor-Travel-Kit_W0QQitemZ150299605707QQcmdZViewItem?ebay=7

I managed to pick one of these up in Asda today.....its a dumb question but for example I plug my camera in one end I assume the fire wire goes into the back of the hard drive.....do I operate it all on my monitor ?

Well its my first external hard drive so dont be too unkind ???

I havent used one David but I assumed that the USB end went into the PC, the Firewire end into the hard drive. Your camera will connect to another USB port on your PC.
The hard drive and the camera should show up on your monitor as extra drives with their own letters.
