Audio & video search engine launched
« on: December 10, 2008, 23:14 »
A new search engine that provides results in video, audio, text and images has been launched.

Kosmix, which is based in Silicon Valley, California, claims to be in "beta-ish" testing. It is backed by $20m (£13.5m) from Time Warner and other high-profile supporters, including Amazon boss Jeff Bezos.

The homepage is more like a web portal, somewhat similar to Yahoo's homepage. It contains a mix of videos, news stories, most searched-for subjects, images and adverts.

A search for 'bicycle', for example, returns entries from Wikipedia as well as news items, videos on cycling, images and adverts - rather than just a list of websites about bicycles.

However, UK users will be disappointed that the video-streaming website Hulu, prominent on Kosmix's homepage, does not work outside the US.

The site, which took three years to build, is the brainchild of web entrepreneurs Anand Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayan, who made $250 by selling online retailer to Amazon.

"If you want a specific piece of information you use search and Google is your best bet," said Rajaraman.

"But sometimes we are not looking for such a specific piece of information but something broader. Sometimes it is far more valuable to get the opinion and discussion and commentary around things."

Kosmix integrates Google's search engine as well as feeds from Twitter, Yahoo and a host of other websites and services.

Kosmix joins Cuil in the list of 2008's new search engines. Cuil claims to have indexed more pages than Google.

As a search engine, yes.  As a 'how much more of your life can we run' engine, not really.  :)
