Vista Access etc
« on: January 20, 2009, 22:23 »
Are there any tips to make vista a bit more like XP ?

1) It won't let me access documents and settings through explorer, which is a bit annoying as I struggle to access things I have saved

2) Everytime I run an .exe it doesn't know I have to confirm it's ok.  :ack: You think it would learn  :dunno:
How car I turn the security down ?

Thanks

You can create shortcuts on your Desktop to any folder.  That's what I've done.

You can turn UAC (User Access Control) off in Control Panel > User Accounts.  You may need to be signed in as Administrator.

Hope that helps.  :)

thanks for the reply. I was going to change to XP, but thought I should at least give it ago.

3) I don't think that was what I was getting at. What I meant was:

you run word.exe > fine it knows what it is
you run shareware program.exe > I don't know this publisher, are you sure ? every bloody time.

Unless we're at cross purposes, I think that's the same thing, Andy.  If not, can you post a screenshot of the dialogue box?

it won't let me do a screen grab with the message up.

I could take a picture with my camera though.

I will try what you sugguested if you think it is the same, and see if it helps.

I didn't wanted to turn that off, as it seamed like a useful security feature

It is a security feature, but a little over zealous for most users.  Apparently, it's been tamed with Windows 7.  You can always turn it back on again if you feel more secure that way, but at least you'll have found out what the annoyance is.  :)

You need to make sure the cookie is saved in your browser, Andy, and not deleted each time the browser is closed.  You should be able to stay logged in then.

I think some of the annoyances, such as that in Vista, will at least be partly eliminated with Windows 7, when it comes along.  It's a shame, because I wouldn't have thought it would have been impossible for UAC to remember a decision, so as to avoid it requesting permission each time.
