FREE Online Storage good or bad?
« on: April 24, 2009, 09:36 »
Since My external hard drive  broke down on me I have been thinking of backing up my pics and stuff to an online storage place.
Can anyone give me some advice on this is it safe secure?  I don't want to have to pay for this if possible is there a free service, do any of you use a online storage or can recommend one, it would just be another option I'm thinking what do you think?

When you stop having dreams and ideals -- well, you might as well stop altogether.

I've heard of people using some services.  Personally, I would be concerned about privacy, and wouldn't store anything too confidential online.

Same here, Simon, plus a lot of these have shut down recently, so I suspect it's not a viable service.

One possibly viable option might be to find an ISP that offers generous webspace, rather than an 'anonymous' online storage facility, which could simply vanish overnight.

I have just had an email off Virgin offering customers (me) free 5GB storage space the size of storage goes with what ever package you have and it's free what do you think about that as an alternative?

It depends whether you would be happy with Virgin, Kaz. Their cable service performs reasonably well, but their ADSL service has come in for a lot of criticism.

I think I read it that Kaz is already with Virgin, Rik.

My personal feeling is still that I wouldn't trust anyone else with my confidential data, but I would think to use it as a backup for pics and non-critical data would be fine.

Ah, missed that. The slow upload speed might be an issue to consider, as might the issue of musical copyright.

Why would copyright be an issue, Rik?  She wouldn't be making the files available to anyone else, although, I suppose the capacity would be there to do so.

Because Virgin are one of the ISPs getting cosy with the BPI.

Rik, what's the index.php thing Kaz will need to do, to stop anyone who stumbles across her webspace from accessing her files?

I don't think it's webspace, but vault space, Simon. If it is webspace, then:

<html>
   <head>
      <title>No Browsing</title>
   </head>
   <body>
      <h1>No Browsing</h1>
   </body>
</html>

Cut'n'paste and save as index.html.
