We use one of those plastic magnifiers over the front of it Rik.  Don't you remember them?   ;D

We had a black and white TV, and we got a plastic 'filter' that hung over the front of the screen, with three colours.  Blue at the top, orange in the middle and green at the bottom.  It was supposed to simulate colour, but was only ever any good for horse racing.  ;D
