Vista & IE7 or IE8
« on: November 19, 2009, 15:51 »
I'm having problems with Internet Explorer.  No matter what version I run, it usually slows down when browsing to the point where I get (Not Responding) and the program has to restart.  :-\  Its frustration because I do like IE, but I'm lucky to have Mozilla too.

Any tips on how to fix the IE problem?   Thanks.

What version of Windows, Maria, how much RAM, free hard disk space and what processor do you have. What AV software do you use? If you open task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del), how many processes are running and how much CPU time are they taking?

Hi Maria, I had the same problem and cured it by uninstalling IE8 completely and then re-installed it. I downloaded and saved it on my desktop before I uninstalled.  ::)

Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit
Ram 3,00 GB
206GB free of 286GB
Processer - Intel(R)Core(TM) 2 Duo CPU T5550@1.83GHz  1.83GHz
processes running 78 (and I don't even know what most of them are for)
cpu time = 5% usage
Microsoft Security Essentials for AV software

(I don't know how to copy the list of processes from the task manager)

Thanks.

That would be useful, Maria. 78 processes is way more than I have on any of my machines.

Actually, what might be easier is if you run a program called HijackThis.  This program will list all of your running processes, and allow you to create a log file, which you can then copy and paste on here.  We'll have a look at it, and see if we can see anything that shouldn't be there.

I'm no expert on these, but I can't see anything obvious, Maria.  Did you say that you can use Mozilla without any problems?  Do you actually use Skype and do you need the toolbar?  I don't use it myself, so I don't know if it's essential, but any add-ons like this can cause problems.

As you have Microsoft Security Essentials, it might be worth disabling WinPatrol, just as a test, in case they are conflicting.  Sorry that's nothing definite, it's just a matter of elimination, really.

No, I have to admit that I don't use Skype or the toolbar.   I'll try disabling WinPatrol and see what happens.   I don't have problems with Mozilla's Firefox, but I'm so used to IE that I use that most the time.

Thanks for looking it over for me.

Basically, I would disable, or preferably, uninstall anything you don't use, especially toolbars, and see if that helps.  Otherwise, try to get used to Mozilla, as it's a much better browser anyway.  :)
