ITunes Installation
« on: January 08, 2010, 11:31 »
I'm trying to install iTunes on my Vista 32 machine but every time it copies files, I get the BSOD.  Can anyone suggest a solution, please?

Don't talk to me about iTunes!  I've been trying to configure it for two users on one machine since Christmas (not for myself, for some friends), and have given up!

Sorry for the totally useless post, Gill.

Is that a BSOD during installation, Gill, or when you try to use it?

It's during installation, Rik.

I was lucky enough to get an iPod for my birthday today, but in order to use it you have to use iTunes to add media.  Is there any other way of doing this?  I've tried dragging and dropping files into the player but it doesn't recognise them.

Without wishing to step on more knowledgable toes, a Windows 7 Upgrade is what did it for me, Gill.  Relatively quick and painless too.  It generally just drops over the top of Vista and you'll find that most of your settings are preserved, while the frequent BSoDs become a thing of the past.  Although a certain amount of fiddling will be required after installation, the learning curve rises steeply after a couple of hours playing with W7.  You'll also wonder why you didn't upgrade sooner.

Just a personal opinion.   :)

No, you have to use iTunes, Gill. Have you tried turning off your AV during installation?

I'll definitely be looking for Windows 7 when I replace my computer.  Vista has been such an unfriendly OS.

I disabled the AV as you suggested, Rik, plus the firewall and all other background programmes.  For good measure I also deleted the Temp folder and uninstalled the software for my Sansa Fuze in case there been a conflict.  I don't know which of these measures worked, but one of them did :) .

Thanks for your help everyone :) .  Now I've just got to familiarise myself with my new toy.  Should be fun :) .

The BSOD is your computer being helpful in stopping the dreadful itunes software from installing.  :ack:
Aagh i feel better for that, i find my Sony Walkman not quite as pretty as the i-thing, but it sounds a lot better and it is completely functional without having to install additional software.  :o:

Oh yes... Happy birthday Gill!   :)

I have to agree with Simon and Daveeb's comments about the functionality of the ITunes software.  It's far from intuitive and that isn't helped by little irritations like the absence of Tooltips when you hover over buttons and things that look like buttons but aren't.  Hardly makes you want to kill for an Apple Mac, does it!  :bubble:

Having owned an MP3 Walkman before this Classic 120GB, I do feel that the One Pod is the far better kit - provided you don't drop it.
