BT fire knocks out broadband across Britain
« on: March 31, 2010, 23:46 »
Thousands of customers in London and the Home Counties are without broadband following a fire at a BT building in London.

Customers as far a field as Sussex, Kent and Essex are being affected by the blackout, following the blaze at Burne House in Paddington. The building was subsequently flooded, causing disruption to both telephone and internet services.

“Following major flooding at a BT exchange in the Paddington area, tens of thousands of customers in parts of North and West London may be experiencing a loss of broadband and/or telephone service," BT said in a statement.

"Customers in other parts of the country may also be affected. We are currently working on restoring services to customers, however as this is a complex incident we cannot accurately predict when all services will be restored. We will issue further updates as the situation changes."

BT says affected customers can call 0800 1690199 for recorded service status updates.

Worrying. It shows how vulnerable the BT network has become as they concentrate it on just a few nodes for the entire country.

There's just 20 nodes. A significant problem at any one of them takes out a huge area.
