Centrino
« on: April 26, 2003, 02:35 »
Hi guys,

I've just bout a new Sony VAIO Z1A laptop with the new Centrino mobile technology (1.3 GHz). So, I just wanted to see what you guys think about it, if any of you has already tried it. I've heard that it gives a better and FASTER performance than P-4 does. For example, they say that a laptop with a 1.3 Centrino processor is faster than another one with a 2.2 GHz desktop processor. Is that true?

Thanks

Hi Skyman,welcome aboard.
Thats out of my scope and I am not sure if anyone other than Adept will have had any experience with them although a few people on here may have read some reviews on it.
Performance of any one make/type of chip is measured in different ways though and can vary depending on which processes are being used to do the comparisons with  :-*

Hi sky_man :welcome:

I've only read reviews at the moment and haven't actually used a Centrino-based notebook, but yes apparently it is true; according to Intel the 1.6GHz Pentium-M is equivalent in performance to a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4-M :o. In the reviews I have read, this has turned out to be an understatement 8) with the Centrino machines being a little bit faster again. Another advantage of Centrino technology is that battery life is also greatly increased - almost doubled in most cases.

Some other brands you may want to look at:-

Acer TravelMate 800
Toshiba Tecra M1
ACi Centurion
Sony VAIO PCG-Z1SP

Hope this helps :)

Thanks a lot guys. I am thrilled to be in such a helpful forum with NICE people.

Adept, that sounds great  ;D. This is a review you guys may want to take a look at (http://www.hardwarecentral.com/hardwarecentral/reviews/4760/2/)

I chose Sony VAIO bacuse I have had one for a long time, and I have never had any problems with it. So I didn't want to take the risk of buying another brand, even though Toshiba Tecra seems to be a great machine too. However, VAIO is still more stylish  ;)

:thanks:

Yep I agree with that. I have a Sony Vaio FX401 - it's about 1  year old but I'm looking to upgrade it soon!

Welcome Sky_Man :)
