Nikon has announced the successor to its popular D3000 digital SLR camera, the modestly named D3100.
The D3100 raises the resolution from 10.2 to 14.2 megapixels; introduces a Live View mode; and gains the ability to shoot Full HD video in H.264 format at 24 frames per second (rising to 30 fps at 720p resolution).
It’s also smaller and lighter than the older model, and boasts an extended ISO range up to 6400 and an improved Guide Mode to help beginners take successful shots.

Mind you, perhaps something relatively cheap might be a way to start practising again?

I've tried with a bridge whilst in Scotland, it's worse if anything (it is degenerative).

I thought coming off some of the meds might have helped.

No, the basic disease remains and the drug that I need to treat it is something I can't take because of the other meds (plus asthma).

That would be the only way, but those aren't the kind of pictures I want to take.

Is a compromise not better than nothing at all?

Not for me, I've always done reportage. The pics I take, apart from landscapes, need to be grabbed in the second that they are there. You can't do that with a tripod, especially in crowds.

I guess there's no easy way round that one.

No, I've tried and it just didn't work. For example, I was trying to photograph a pipe band on the march, but I couldn't set up, take it and get out of the way in time. Same with candid shots of dancers practising. A tripod makes you very visible.

Indeed, and as you say, often the best shots are gone in half a second.
