4 goals in extra time?

Quite right, Sam, if they could do it then, why not get on and do it in normal time. ;)

Sorry its late

Quote
Leiston have made it through to the last sixteen of the FA Vase for the first time in their history. After 90 minutes the game was all square at 2-2 but in extra time, Leiston were too strong for Guildford City and scored four goals to give Guildford a rare taste of defeat at home.

An Extra Time onslaught booked Leiston's first ever passage into the last sixteen of the FA Vase and deservedly so. After overturning a half time deficit, Leiston dominated the second half and the tie should have been won in normal time. Guildford City are having a great season and haven't tasted defeat since September in the FA Cup. On a very heavy pitch and in somewhat strange surroundings, Leiston kicked off. But it was City who settled well and after Stannard saved Guilford's shot, he was forced to make a flying save on five minutes as Camara's shot had deflected off Goldfinch. Leiston took time to settle and only a finger tip save from Stannard denied the lively Guilford on 20 minutes. A minute later the visitors had the opportunity to take the lead with their first real chance. Smy did brilliantly down the left and his run into the box was ended by a trip by De Freitas with a penalty the outcome. Skipper David Head stepped up but drove his shot against the foot of Hall's right hand post. City began taking control possession wise, but all too often looked for long balls to their front men that Leiston dealt with. Leiston responded with Heath firing wide after good work from M Brothers. With a minute of the half remaining the home side opened the scoring. P Brothers impeded Tydeman right next to the corner flag. Tydeman got up to deliver his free kick into the box for player of the half, Guilford, to out jump David Head and plant his header beyond Stannard. There was still time in the half for Tydeman to be booked for a foul on P Brothers and to become the fourth player to be booked. After the break nobody could envisage what was to happen. Within a minute Smy was fouled wide on the right flank. Boardley's free kick curled into the box and with everyone just ball watching Smy came in at the far post to control and round Hall before netting. The visiting traveling support had only just stopped celebrating when Smy hit a second. Good work from Heath down the right saw his cross into the box cleared only as far as Smy who swept home the loose ball low to Hall's left. Euphoria followed on the terraces high beyond the running track. Leiston were now in charge and M Brothers saw a well hit volley only clear Hall's bar by a foot. The visitors were starting to dominate and moving the ball a lot more confidently. On 71 minutes further fine play from M Brothers saw a 16 yard lob clear Hall but De Freitas somehow hooked the shot out from under the bar. An amazing yellow card followed for City Substitute Penson who took too long to put on his shirt and enter the field! With fourteen minutes remaining the home side drew level against the run of play. Substitute Hughes, who was starting to cause a few problems, did well to forge a way into the area and his cross ricocheted off Calver towards goal but Saker cleared. The Leiston full back chased the loose ball and was penalised for a foul on Gibbs but he had clearly won the ball. Cooper's free kick landed to Gibbs whose shot through a sea of legs somehow found the net. For a few minutes Leiston looked shell shocked and with ten minutes remaining Camara found himself clean through but an awful first touch saw the ball go out for a goal kick. P Brothers was starting to exploit space down the left and from one of his crosses Chaplin sliced his clearance but Calver fired wide. Stannard had to make two saves late in the game but with extra time beckoning and the game into stoppage time, Leiston missed two glorious chances from superb crosses from P Brothers. First Calver whose shot was saved by Chaplin on the line. A similar chance moments later fell to Heath but with the goal gaping he fired straight at Hall.

So onto extra time and Leiston looked confident from the off. The home side looked to have changed their formation which invited Leiston on more. It seemed a mistake in the making and on 96 minutes the visitors got their noses in front again. P Brothers went charging down the left leaving De Freitas in his wake and his fine cross found Heath whose volley found the net via the right hand post. The confident visitors were now totally in charge and after Ottley-Gooch fired wide, Heath hit his second and the fourth as he raced clear onto P Brothers pass and finished confidently. Two minutes later Boardley clever pass released the marauding Ottley-Gooch who flashed home the fifth. Four minutes later Saker and Ottley-Gooch exchanged passes down the right and Saker's cross was turned into his own net by De Freitas. Three minutes later Penson received a second yellow card and was dismissed for a crude challenge on Ottley-Gooch. Two minutes later and Guilford followed him for an early bath following a straight red for a reckless challenge on David Head. Only two fine saves from Hall denied Leiston further goals and in the final minute Heath rattled the home bar.

After a sluggish opening half Leiston totally dominated and will have felt aggrieved not to have won the tie in normal time. Against a side topping their League Leiston could have hit double figures on chances created but a very strong team performance saw a last sixteen place achieved for the very first time.
