It's too cold to go into the workshop so I've been teaching myself how to chip carve.  It requires hardly any tools, it's quiet, it makes very little mess and it is easy to tidy afterwards.  I thought you might be interested to see what a rank beginner can achieve, so here's my practice piece (complete with mistakes):

Naaaaahhhh..... When you chip carve, you rest one knuckle and your thumb on the workpiece, locking your thumb against the knife handle.  No matter what else you might slice off, your thumb is safe.
