I Can't Believe It's Edible!
« on: December 05, 2011, 12:12 »
I thought this very interesting article might be worth spreading.

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys.  When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put up the money for research wanted a payback, so they put their heads together to work out what they could do with this product to recover their investment.  It was a white substance with no food appeal, so they added yellow colouring and some clever flavourings and sold it to us for use as a Butter substitute.

Do you know the difference between Margarine and Butter?  Both have the same amount of calories.  Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams for Margarine.

Eating Margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of Butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.  Eating Butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.  Butter has many nutritional benefits whereas Margarine has few, and then only because they are added.

Butter tastes better than Margarine and it enhances the flavours of other foods.  Butter has been around for centuries whereas Margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now for Margarine:-
Very high in trans fatty acids.
Triples risk of coronary heart disease.
Increases total cholesterol, including LDL (the 'bad' cholesterol)
Lowers HDL cholesterol, ('good' cholesterol).
Increases the risk of certain cancers up to five times.
Lowers quality of breast milk.
Decreases immune response.
Decreases Insulin response.

Here's probably the most disturbing fact:  Margarine is but one molecule away from being Plastic and shares 27 ingredients with Paint!

These facts were enough to have me avoiding Margarine for life - and anything else that is "Hydrogenated" (this means Hydrogen has been added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

Open a tub of Margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area.  Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:
   * no flies, not even those annoying Fruit Flies will go near it (that should tell you something).
   * it does not rot or smell differently because it has non-nutritional value; nothing will grow on it.  Even those teeny weeny micro-organisms will not a find a home to grow.  Why?  Because it's nearly plastic.

Pass the butter please?

Yuk!  The only trouble with real butter is that it goes rock hard in the fridge, and is impossible to spread on a piece of bread, without it subsequently looking like its been under a train.

Thanks for that message Rod.  I have never eaten margarine and very rarely eat butter these days.  My favourite spread is Olivio which is now called Bertolli.  It's supposed to be made from olive oil and spreads straight from the fridge.

I prefer it to butter, but it's very much personal taste.

Who wrote that article?  It's one of the most biased I've seen in years.
There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is readily adopted.
