Time I did something...

I risked my netbook.   

[Clive]

The netbook running Windows 7 starter was fine but the laptop running Windows 7 premium was trashed and refused to start up.  I had to carry out a system restore to get it booted up.  Yet again MS is using us as guinea pigs.

My XP machine seems to have survived, despite M$'s best efforts.

I haven't done my XP machines yet.

Updated both of my W7 machines with no problems

I say mine survived - it was really slow this evening, with the hard drive churning away for about half an hour, then it took about 6 minutes to shut down.

I noticed that it downloaded IE9 which might be the culprit.  Can you uninstall it since you are unlikely to use it?

[Simon]

I don't think IE9 would have been downloaded, as it's not XP compatible, as far as I believe. 

[Clive]

It was downloaded on my Win 7 laptop for certain.  But I understand it's almost impossible to remove.

Still IE8 on here.

Yeah. You have to go into the windows packages

My problem might have been because I moved a lot of files the other night, to free up some drive space. I did a defrag today, and that seems to have had a small positive effect.
