Can't honestly say I'm all that excited about it.

Me neither!  I've been thinking about a smartphone for the past year but I'm still quite happy with my Tesco phone which is quite simple.  Trouble is I'd be afraid to take a smartphone abroad because they download so much data which you don't want but have to pay for.  Even my son keeps his switched off when he goes abroad.

You can 'tame' them by turning off mobile data when abroad (or, anywhere), but I've heard that using the internet on one while 'roaming', will cost an arm and a leg.  I remember Jeremy Vine coming back off holiday, and complaining that it had cost him £11 to watch a short clip on YouTube, while abroad.

My son always buys a local cheap pay as you go local phone when he goes abroad and gives it away before he gets on the plane home.

Not a bad idea, I guess.

Having said that, I'm finding it screamfully difficult to make this thing recognise QR's.  Any help would therefore be very much appreciated in that regard.

Within Apple? What browser are you using?

No, Samsung Galaxy SIII with Firefox.  Actually, I'm wondering whether I need to download an app for scanning QR's, although my old Nokia E71 did it automatically and I assumed this phone would too.
