caps lock key problem
« on: April 23, 2013, 10:31 »
Hi Pals,

Odd problem.

When caps lock is activated it changes the keyboard, for example, when I press c, zc appears, and if the printer is on it will print it.
Updated driver and I've tried rebooting and resetting the keyboard (Spanish) but it didn't work.

Windows 7
Presario CQ57

Any ideas

Cheers

I suggest the first thing to try would be another keyboard.  Then you'll know if it's the keyboard itself at fault.  Have you turned it upside down and given it a shake to see if anything drops out from between the keys?

Hi Simon
Thanks for that

Maybe I should have pointed out that it's a laptop so the cure is probably more complicated.
My previous laptop had a crumb under the key problem, which was quickly fixed.
The keyboard works fine until I activate caps :dunno:
It's not really a big problem as I can still use shift, but I would like to get to the bottom of it.

Can you take the keys off? Might just be a bad contact.

It could also be software. Boot off a live CD and see if the same issue happens?

Hi Sam

I managed to remove the key, almost broke it because it was connected with two small hinges. It's clean.
I also think it's a software problem and the laptop didn't come with a CD, so....
I'll have to scratch my head a bit more, after a tinnie.

Thanks!

Might be a silly question but does it do the same if set to English language?

Try a Ubuntu live cd? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD - see if it boots with the same issue.

Hi Pals

It's fixed!

One of my students had a look at it, a software engineer. She gave it back to me in full working order.
I asked her how she fixed it and she just said you won't understand :dunno: I will try asking her again, maybe.

Thanks

John
