It sounds as though my CPU fan is about to pop it's clogs, if it does, that's it bye bye 2000XP. Bye bye games, bye bye net, bye bye upgrades. Any idea if my fan is about to go because it sounds baaaad.

Sounds quiet from here Robotochan ;) ;D

Seriously though, just because it's noisy it doesn't necessarily mean that it's about to break down completely.

I thought you just bought a new one ???

Still trying to get help from peeps for a good fan and heatsink for £15 odd and good grease for about £5

I think my GFX card may have to wait :(

Think I'll beg for £30 from my mum so I can afford all the stuff.

I might just go for

Akasa AK785CU Copper Based HSF as it takes up to 2800XPs

and

Arctic Alumina Thermal Adhesive 5g

These are in my price range  ???

Sounds to me like anything would be good right now Robo ;)

Bat69 is the main man on cooling, but unfortunately he's taking a break at the moment. Hopefully one of the others can help.

I have a CoolerMaster in my PC, which seems OK. I checked and it isn't rated for a 2000+ so I won't bother recommending it ;)

Just for reference, I wouldn't go more than the XP2000 with that sink and fan ... reports I've read suggest it isn't quite upto it.

However the XP2400+ and above are more heat efficient, so they may work reasonably well, but I would still opt for something a bit better if you can stretch your finances.

Also, it only has a 60mm fan, giving 25cu.ft/min airflow, which isn't much, but will be reasonably quiet

Funny an additional exhaust fan I fitted has been noisy than normal three times whilst PC was in standby mode.

PC Alert monitor indicated it was going at ball park 1900 rpm as against normaly running 2576/2636 rpm. So I took the side panel off and stuck my finger in the fan  ::)that sorted it, back to 2600 and quiet.

CPU fan runs at around 3800 rpm. I have a spare one which i fitted as a intake fan, but switched it off. My AMD2000+ runs at 47.c and the Bios shutdown options range from 75 to 95.c so no sweat there right.

Bugger revs have dropped to 1940 and noisy again, think I'll disconnect it and see how it affects CPU temp, I doubt by much really. System temp now reading 35/36.c

Sod it, off to whatch a film  ;D

Children and idiots are reminded that it is not a good idea to stick one's finger into a fan rotating at 2600 rpm ::) ::) ;)

CPU temp holding at 48.c system temp 38.c so sod running extra fans. I only bought them because there seemed to be concerns on the boards about the as new then AMDXP range running hot.

I reckon you only need to up rate the cooling on AMD machines, if they are running at full pelt, or are being overclocked. Ialso reckon it becomes an obsession with OC'ers too not only run it at its fastest but also it's coolest, abit like having an obsessive food disorder really  ;D

It's not the rpm that matter but whats driving the bugger  ;D
