Topic: Photo software Win 10

Not sure when this happened but my photo software seems to have disappeared and replaced by something totally useless.  No thumbprints and very difficult to use.  What software might be best for storing and cropping my holiday photos?

Are you talking about Paint?  I think the old version is still there but Windows 10 might have hidden it.

I’d opt for Faststone Image Viewer. I think it’s still freeware but I heard rumours there is now a small charge.  Anyway, it’s what we recommend to everyone in our camera group.

RawTherapee, DarkTable and the Gimp are other programs to consider.  All are excellent Open Source software but they might have more features than you’re after.

Yes, it goes to Paint which has now changed beyond all recognition.  Thanks for that information Gill.  I will experiment.

I started to download Faststone and then realised it was a CNet download so I deleted it because I've had bad experiences in the past.  Now I've downloaded Gimp which seems fine.  Many thanks Gill.

I've never had a problem with Cnet  .  How about a viewer such as JpegView instead?  I've never used it but it seems to be highly regarded and isn't associated with Cnet.  The Crop feature isn't immediately obvious from what I understand; you have to press CTRL and drag with the mouse to crop, and to resize you press SHIFT+CTRL+S to save the currently visible image area in screen resolution.

The Gimp is an excellent piece of image editing software, especially since its recent upgrade, but it isn't very good for skimming through a selection of images in the same way as an image viewer.

Yes, they changed Paint to Paint3D, but the old Paint is still there as well.

I have found an excellent alternative to the photo imaging software suggested above.  Take a look at Faststone Image Viewer which does slide shows of your photo files - just what I wanted!

   I downloaded it direct from their website and there were no problems at all.  I have an aversion to CNet.     And it's definitely still free.
