If the motherboard has a VIA Chipset the download the latest VIA 4 in 1 drivers from there site these include the sound drivers

Sorry m8 this information is incorrect the drivers for the audio card are not included in the 4 in 1 set

USB stuff usually wants the software installing before the equipment is connected

Did it work ok on 98 so is it a case of searching for drivers for XP again or is it new?

Its simple you just copy the information you want to quote then click on the Add YABBC tags: last one on the bottom right is the quotes tab which puts the quote tabs in you message for you

I have a BUSBY USB Universal Hub which appears to be working but not quite correctly. The green lights for each port stay lit when the pc is turned off. I can't find the software I got with the device  :-[ I've tried their website  www.busby.co.uk which doesn't exist

I didn't get around to trying the scanner with 98.

No, its a driver problem not a bios problem

Arthur,try putting your scanner directly into the PC usb port so that you can eliminate any problems with the hub.
Is the hub a mains powered one,I think it must be if your port lights stay on after the PC is off?
If it isnt,then mains powered ones are usually better as the max. available current per port is only 500ma.
Usually hubs dont have any software or drivers to install as long as the usb ports that they are connected to the PC through are enabled in BIOS

I will try plugging the scanner in direct.

In the meantime, I have another wee problem. Don't know if it's related to any of the tweeks we've been carrying out over the last few days. The following message comes up on the screen at switch on. When I press OK it tries to boot up again and again. If I press F8 when booting then select boot from IDE 0 then it boots up ok. I've also tried pressing ESC at boot up, which ignores memory test and this also works.

Isass.exe - System Error
An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the Registry.

Any ideas?

Cant think why its doing that Arthur,maybe Adept ot Lobo will know.
In the meantime try this :

Right click on My Computer and select Properties,then Advanced then Start Up and Recovery Settings.
Untick Automatically Restart under System Failure and see if that sorts it out for you,if its still the same then go back and retick it

Even Microsoft seems to have no clue what causes it. Not surprizing. The only real common cause anybody has uncovered is that most of the machines with the problem that ran a virus scan before repairing DID contain assorted viruses but no real pattern to it.

The only answer is a compleat restore or new installation
