INCREASING RESTORE POINTS IN SCANREG

Open C:\WINDOWS\SCANREG.INI with Notepad and increase the MaxBackupCopies= value from 5 to the desired number. e.g. =10.
You then have more possibilities when using scanreg /restore, instead of system restore, which you should also disable in the system troubleshooting control panel. You can now uncheck ALL items in msconfig relating to system restore if you want to.

SUWIN error in verx.dll during Setup

There appear to be more and more of these errors cropping up and the only solution so far has been a parallel install.

While a parallel install works, it requires reinstalling all your applications, which can have enormous cost in time.

The problem is due to either a new version of Windows Media Player or Internet Explorer and the way to fix each one is listed below:

IE:

Rename c:\windows\system\iemigrat.dll *.old

Rename c:\program files\Internet Explorer\W2k\migrate.dll *.old

Rename c:\program files\outlook express\9xmig.dll *.old

WMP:

Rename c:\windows\system wmp*.dll *.old

Rename c:\windows\system wmp.ocx *.xoc

Rename c:\program files\windows media player wmp

After that, run setup again.

This is a common problem lately for many people using IE6 You just need to replace the dispex.dll file with a different version.

Henri Leboeuf posted:

"Several people have reported this error recently.
This error results from installing the latest build of Windows Script Host 5.6 (dated 4/23/03).
The latest build has a serious bug in the file dispex.dll that breaks PrintPreview, Find, and WindowsUpdates in Internet Explorer.

If you have already installed this new build, you need to track down and replace the system file dispex.dll with the previous version."

Here's a link to a copy which is IE6 compatible. Try renaming your present one dispex.old and copying this one to same folder. This is a direct download link:

In the Registry Editor, go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explor

If the Policies or Explorer keys are missing, create them by right clicking on the previous key, [Current version] select New, and Key, and give the new keys their names, [Policies & Explorer]

Click on the Explorer key to view its values in the right pane. If there is not a value named NoNetHood in the right pane, create it by right-clicking on the Explorer key, selecting New, and DWORD Value.

In the right pane, NoNetHood should have a value data of 0x00000001 (0) next to it.

Double-click on NoNetHood and a dialogue box will appear allowing you to edit the DWORD value. In the Value Data space should be a single zero. Change it to a 1 and click on OK. Now the data figure beside NoNetHood should be 0x00000001 (1).

Close the Registry, and reboot your computer.

REMOVING NETWORK ICON

To remove the network icon you have to do open regedit.exe by typing in
regedit at, start > run, and go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT
VERSION\POLICIES\EXPLORER

Select NEW from the edit option
Click DWORD to create a new entry
Name it NoNetHood set the value to 1 and reboot
To restore the icon change the value to 0

Open the Registry by running REGEDIT.EXE , which you will find at
C:\WINDOWS\REGEDIT.EXE & which you can also put onto your Start Menu, and go to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ lnkfile ... and delete the value ... IsShortcut

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ piffile ... and delete the value ... IsShortcut

Close the Registry Editor and Re-Boot your computer.
