I can access websites from address bar no problem but if I try to click on websites from search engine explorer hangs and I have to ctr alt del and exit explorer.  I have tested with various search engines and receive the same result. If I copy and paste the addresses from the search engine into address bar I can access them, so it isn't a problem with the sites. I have uninstalled ex6 and re-installed but its just the same. This problem only happened since new hard drive was installed.

Are you using a pop up stopper, Lona?  If so, try disabling it and see what happens.

I don't have a popup stopper running Simon. I have norton antivirus running, could it have a builtin popup stopper maybe.

Norton Firewall does, but not NAV, Lona.  I think even in Norton Firewall you have to enable it, but you haven't got that anymore have you?

How about trying a repair of IE, or a re-installation on top of itself?

A stopper wouldnt cause it to freeze when trying to open a link, its more likely to be an IE problem or setup option but shes repaired it and reinstalled it so I cant think at the moment what it could be apart from some kind of conflict  ???

It may be a problem with the sound that Windows plays when the URL is clicked.

I can't quite remember where it is kept in Windows Millennium (Control Panel|Sounds maybe?), but there is somewhere where you can change the sound associated with clicking the url.

Only joking and it's so long since I used Internet Explorer that I can't remember what choices are in the options, but the first place I would look is for an option that opens a link in a new window.   I'm only guessing, but from what you say, it looks to me as if when you click on a link it tries to open a new window and is causing the browser to crash.

As you are telling something about the cause, it could be there Lona.

Are you sure that your hard drive is coreectly installed and connected?

That's what I am not sure of Joudi. I phoned the warrenty folk and they said if it's found to be a software problem then I will be charged for the call out. :(. I am hoping it is a faulty HD installation. :-\

I would be very surprised if it was a hard drive problem, if everything else is working OK, Lona.  As Dave said, it sounds like a setting in IE.  In Internet Options > Advanced, there is a setting "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts".  It's ticked on mine, and my IE works OK.  Clutching at straws really, but it might be worth unticking it, closing IE, then re-open IE and re-tick the same box.  You never know it might just work.  I can't find an option in IE to "open links in a new window", but I'm sure I've seen it somewhere before.   :-\

Make sure that you have the latest version of IE Lona, I think its Ver 6-2800-1106 now that may help.  Or uninstall IE and reinstall it

I understand what you are saying, Simon and in the advanced settings the box is ticked. What I do not understand is, if I copy and past the website addy from the search engine into the address bar explorer does not freeze. I can then go to links from any website and it works ok.  It's only if I try to access a website directly from a search engine and that applies to any search engine.  I have tested it on google, altavista and dogpile.

I wasn't kidding about the sound thing Lona. A corrupted "click" sound file can crash IE.

Have a look in control panel | sounds. In the Windows Explorer section you will find an entry marked Start Navigation.

Click it and press the play button. If the sound plays OK, forget I mentioned it ::) Otherwise you need to click browse and choose a different sound file :)
